Frequently asked questions

A channel is silent — is something broken?

Probably not. Scanrad.io plays real radio, so a channel only has sound when someone is actually transmitting. If a live channel is quiet, no one is talking on it right now. To hear audio immediately, open a channel and tap the green play button on any past group on the Decodes tab.

What does “Play Live” do?

It tunes to the most recent point on a channel. If there’s no recent transmission yet, it shows “Waiting for live audio…” and starts playing automatically as soon as new audio arrives.

How do favorites work?

Tap the star next to a channel to favorite it; favorites appear in their own section at the top of the list. They’re stored only on your device.

What do the labels next to each transmission mean?

They show the time of the transmission and the radio unit/talkgroup identifiers involved. This is radio addressing information only — no names, addresses, or other personal details.

Why are times sometimes different from my local clock?

Times are shown in each channel’s own local timezone, so what you see matches when events actually happened on that channel.

What devices are supported?

iPhone running iOS 17 or later. Audio continues in the background and can be controlled from the lock screen and Control Center.

Is listening to this legal?

Scanrad.io plays lawful, over-the-air reception of public radio transmissions, which is legal in the United States. Availability and legality of radio reception vary by region — please use the app in accordance with your local laws.
